ODE TO ZOE

I wrote this poem recently for our granddaughter

on her tenth birthday. She was our first grandchild
and my husband and I often refer to her
as the peacemaker. She hates to see anyone upset
and will often take the blame for a situation herself
when things go wrong, or will give an explanation
to try to smooth things over.

                                     ***

Congratulations – now you’re 10
The world is rushing on ahead
Challenges are plenty, when
Your life is more than things you’ve said.

Every day surprises come
From little deeds that you have done
With wonder at the grace of you
We often say, ‘That’s Zoe’s view.’

A granddaughter could not be more
Than you have meant for us
You’ve given subtle gifts galore
You’re loved and so precious.

Grandma and Grandad.
